In these uncertain times…
No, let’s not start with that - we know you’ve heard it a million times in the last few months and probably tune out the second you read/hear that phrase. Instead, we’ll start this article by highlighting the importance of finding the silver lining in every stormcloud. That is, while there’s a lot of depressing stuff happening at the moment (for obvious reasons), there’s something positive that’s come from it: a distinct lack of crowds at otherwise popular caravanning holiday spots!
So before we get back to a relative normal in the near future, hitch up the van and visit these great destinations in the Australian Capital Territory.
Day trips ahoy
Corin Forest Mountain Resort
An hour’s drive from the Canberra CBD takes you to Corin Forest, where in winter you can snowboard, ski (lessons available for those who need it) or just chill out in the cafe with a nice hot chocolate in your hands watching the action. When the snow finally melts in the spring and all through summer, you’ll love taking the 1.2km-long toboggan through the Mountain Ash forest.
The Truffle Farm
Go for a black truffle hunt with the highly-trained dogs at the Truffle Farm, just a short 15-minute drive out of Canberra. After you’ve successfully uncovered some, you’ll then head back to HQ and learn the best ways to use this delicacy in recipes with a cooking demo by the chef. And yes, there’s a tasting (complete with locally-made wine).
Wonderful weekends
Woods Reserve
Just around the corner from the Corin Forest Mountain Resort, Woods Reserve is a world away while only an hour’s drive southwest of Canberra. You’ll be staying on the beautiful bank of Gibraltar Creek and are a stone’s throw from Gibraltar Falls - a tranquil waterfall cascading off the rocks that offers great photo ops. Throw a line out at one of the great fishing spots in the area.
Blue Range Hut
Blue Range Hut will become one of your favourite places to stay almost as soon as you arrive. It’s only 40 minutes west out of Canberra’s centre and the drive is nice and easy, so you’ll be unwinding in the middle of the bush before you know it! Pit toilets, gas- and wood-fired barbecues, picnic table and open fireplace can all be found in and around Blue Range Hut, and activities include bushwalking, horse riding and putting your feet up and doing absolutely nothing. Be sure to book.
Week-away holidays
Tablelands
Take your time working your way through the Tablelands, because there are plenty of stops to make and they really can’t be rushed. From the Queanbeyan-Palerang region and its nature reserves, national parks and museums to the Wombeyan Caves in Upper Lachlan, the Goulburn region’s heritage architecture and landscapes, seemingly infinite activities in Yass Valley and so much more, a week may not actually be enough!
Wine, wine, wine
There’s a difference between doing Canberra’s wine region over a weekend and dedicating a full week to really take it all in. And man, there are enough wineries to fill up a week and then some - over 30 wineries and cellar doors, in fact. For those who prefer hops to grapes, you’ll love hitting up the microbrewery hub that delivers some of the best craft beer in Australia.
