Q: What’s better than a caravanning trip in the Northern Territory?
A: Not a whole lot, actually!
If you’ve been hearing your caravan calling out your name, give it what it wants and take it on the road for a hard-earned road trip and get as far away from the everyday BS as you can while the tourist traffic is low. Enjoy the places around NT you’d otherwise give a wide berth to due to crowds and take advantage of the travel restrictions while they’re still in place - including the fantastic destinations we’ve listed below.
Day trips ahoy
Berry Springs National Park
A hop, skip and jump out of Darwin is Berry Springs National Park, where you can work up a sweat bush walking to its historical ruins from WWII, do a bit of bird watching, smell the beautiful native flowers (blooming from March-April) and finally escape the heat and go for a dip in one of the many spring water pools. Less than an hour out of Darwin, it makes for a great - and easy - day away.
Cutta Cutta Caves National Park
Travel 30 clicks south of Katherine to find Cutta Cutta Caves National Park, a spectacular limestone landscape that covers a hair under 1500 hectares for you to explore. Chock-full of impressive stalagmites, stalactites and wildlife (including 5 species of bats - Ace Ventura’s literal nightmare), it’s really a lot of fun making your way through the caves on the guided tour. There’s also some bush walking and bird watching opportunities in the park outside the caves.
Wonderful weekends
Glen Helen Gorge
At the time of writing the only place to set up camp in the area, the Glen Helen Lodge, is currently closed for maintenance as a result of the drastically-reduced tourism numbers caused by COVID-19. But as long as you stock up on water, food and other essentials (don’t forget extra fuel!) you’ll be able to find somewhere to park up somewhere with your van to spend the night.
An hour and a half west of Alice Springs, the scenery and landscapes at Glen Helen Gorge are sure to impress. The Finke River makes its way through the ranges and is a great opportunity for a cooling swim. Other activities include bush walking, bird watching and nature walks.
Noonamah
You don’t have to travel too far to find peace and quiet for your next weekend getaway! Noonamah is just 45 kilometres from Darwin and delivers a relaxed, rural feel for you to properly disengage from the world, if only for a night or two. The Noonamah Tourist Park has everything you might need on your trip, and is really well-priced.
Week-away holidays
Litchfield National Park
Normally, Litchfield National Park will host more than 250,000 tourists each year. 2020, though, had different plans, and as such if you’re a NT local but have avoided its crowds, now is your perfect opportunity to visit and spend a while checking it out properly. Sights include the Lost City’s sandstone pillars, pools with crystal-clear water great for swimming, waterfalls and termite mounds. Set up camp at the Litchfield Tourist Park - it’s got great facilities and is in the perfect location.
Erldunda
Call off the search for a destination that’s more remote than the back o’ Bourke - you’ve found it in Erldunda. Never have you been better-placed to leave work emails and other worries of everyday life behind than when you visit Erldunda, a couple of hundred k’s southwest of Alice Springs (the centre of the centre, as locals refer to it).
Erldunda Roadhouse is just an awesome place to park up the van for a week, offering facilities including swimming pool, tennis court and restaurant/bar. Maybe best of all, there’s really nothing else around which means you can kick back, relax and forget about life’s stresses.
