With a total coastline length of 4882 kilometres, all of which a maximum of about 3-4 hours’ drive away, owning a boat in Tassie means you’re able to wave goodbye to land for a while and float far away from the daily grind. The last few months have been pretty bloody surreal, and if you’re ready to take a well-earned break out on the water, we’ve put together a list of suggestions you might not have even heard of.
Oh, and if you don’t yet own a boat or want to upgrade your existing vessel to something newer/better, give us a call now on 1300 787 288 - we’ll help find the perfect boat finance out there!
Day trips ahoy
Lake St Clair
A hundred and thirty k’s northwest of Hobart and close to the centre of Tassie, Lake St Clair sits at the bottom of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. It offers great freshwater boating and is actually Australia’s deepest freshwater lake at 167 metres. There’s plenty of fish out there for keen anglers, and if you get there when it’s relatively deserted the water skiing is tops.
Tinderbox
One of the lesser-known beaches in Tasmania is Tinderbox, about half an hour on the road from Hobart. Because the area is a protected marine reserve fishing is not allowed, but the lack of crowds and serene surrounds can provide you with a great relaxed day out on the water.
Wonderful weekends
Snug Beach
Only 24 k’s out of Hobart, the quaint little town of Snug (how awesome is that name, by the way) has everything you need to get away for a chilled out weekend that includes some good times on the water. The Snug Beach Caravan and Cabin Park is our recommended accommodation option - it’s in an ideal position and has all the amenities you’ll need - and you can launch your boat right off Snug Beach.
Pirates Bay
Nope, not where some naughty people used to go to torrent things. Pirates Bay in Tasmania offers a spectacular combination of both gorgeous sandy beaches and rocky coastline with some intense high cliffs, so whether you’re craving some seriously fun waves to surf or would rather throw out a line and catch your dinner, you can do it here. There are a few accommodation options with varied budget levels, with the boat ramp at the southern point of the Bay.
Week-away holidays
Huon River
Oay, we know this isn’t the most secret place to take your boat in Tassie. But there’s a difference between a day or overnight and actually spending some quality time there because it’s pretty darn long - 174 k’s long, in fact. This is an especially good destination for those of you looking for somewhere that offers a total disconnect; while you’re not too far from civilisation, you probably won’t come across much other boat traffic when you’re there. Put your feet up, throw in a line, crack open a cold beer and enjoy the serenity. Launch from Franklin, Port Huon or Huonville. Camp at the Huon Campground or, if camping’s not your cup of tea, Port Huon Cottages is great and not mega-pricey.
Boat Harbour
If white sand beaches, clear water, great fishing and surfing, and a brilliant stretch of coastline on either side to take your boat along sounds good, Boat Harbour Beach is for you. There’s a boat ramp at the beach, providing you with easy access to get out and enjoy the water. If you’re planning on swimming or surfing, visit mid-summer otherwise you’ll probably need to kit up head-to-toe in a wetsuit as it can get a smidge chilly at other times of the year.
Our choice in accommodation is the Boat Harbour Beach Holiday Park.
