We’re so lucky to live in this incredible sun-blessed country. There are so many beaches, landmarks, big ‘things’, views and (dare we say, most importantly) pubs to check out that it’d take a few lifetimes to tick it all off. So if you’ve made the decision to hit the road and take a road trip around Australia, you can rest assured you’re going to have an absolute blast no matter where you’re planning on visiting along the way.
But before you head off on your epic journey, there are a few things to make sure you’ve sorted out that’ll help avoid any issues along the way.
1. Get the right vehicle for the job
If you’re planning to stay on the bitumen the whole time, you won’t need a 4WD.
BUT…
There are so many breathtaking views you may not be able to see without one. And really, why not make sure you don’t miss a thing while you’re off on your adventure? Extra points, too, for a turbo-diesel engine 4WD if you’re towing a camper trailer or caravan to keep your fuel costs down.
At Stratton FInance we’ll not only find you an amazing finance deal on your new 4WD; we also cater for caravans, camper trailers and even RVs. Use our online finance calculator to find out how low your monthly repayments could be or give us a call on 1300 787 288 for a chat about how we can help.
2. Make sure you have solid comprehensive insurance
Fine print and exclusions in policies can come back to bite you, which is the last thing you want when you’re supposed to be on the trip of a lifetime. Be sure to check your current policy to confirm everything you want covered is in fact covered, and if not - time to go insurance shopping!
We offer premium comprehensive insurance plans - at below-premium prices - that can be catered to suit your needs. Talk to us about what’s on offer today on 1300 787 288!
3. Remember to pack the essentials
No, we’re not talking stubby holders and six-packs in the Engel. Make sure you’ve got a fully-stocked first aid kit, lots of food and water, blankets, and, if you’re going REALLY remote, a satellite phone (some areas don’t have any phone network at all).
In case you get bogged, we also highly recommend packing a shovel, set of MaxTrax and snatch strap - though you could be waiting a while for someone to come along and pull you out so consider a winch instead.
4. Have it all mapped out
This can help you estimate how long the trip will take, and you’ll be able to make sure you’re going to places at the right times. That is, stopping through towns to see markets, festivals and the like, as well as travelling on a route that coincides with the weather in which you want to travel.
Plus, you can give your itinerary to your family so they have a good idea where you are while you’re gone.
5. Arrange for a family member/friend/neighbour to check on your house
This is especially important on the day you leave. Ask them to swing past about 30 minutes or so after you’ve headed off to make sure the oven/stove/hair straightener is off and message you to confirm so there’s no need to turn around and do it yourself ‘just in case’.
Knowing someone is keeping an eye on things can prevent worry or stress, allowing you to focus on what’s important - having fun!
