Okay, so maybe we made that statistic up, but let’s be honest - going months or even years without taking any time not just away from work but also the worries of life is most likely not a good thing for our well-being. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, right? And we don’t want to end up like ol’ Jack Torrance from The Shining, do we?

Day trips ahoy

Yanchep Lagoon

Western Australia is spoiled for choice in terms of beautiful beaches. But Yanchep Lagoon, located just 45 minutes north of Perth, doesn’t just boast an amazing beach with mild waves perfect for families; there’s also really nice parkland with a playground, some great eats (and drinks), and close to Yanchep National Park and its Crystal Cave as well as koala sanctuary. A fantastic day trip with the family.

Claisebrook Cove

If you’ve never visited this Perth suburb (or even heard of it), we’re not surprised. While it’s not really well-known, you can take advantage of the uncannily calm and quiet that’s so near the CBD. There’s plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars to choose from, with fishing and kayaking opportunities on the Swan River should you be so inclined.

Wonderful weekends

New Norcia

An hour and a half drive up the Great Northern and Tonkin Highways will get you to New Norcia, Australia’s sole monastic town founded by Spanish Benedictine Monks way back in 1847. It’s all a bit of a surreal feeling when you arrive, in a good way though. There’s a museum and art gallery, monastery, and lots of historical Spanish architecture to see. We highly recommend staying the night in the monastic guest house over other accommodation options.

Ferguson Valley

Forego the hustle and bustle of Margaret River - a great weekend away is calling from Ferguson Valley, just a couple of hours drive south of Perth. An ideal destination for wine and beer lovers both, you can find two breweries and over 12 wineries all a stone’s throw away from one another. Not to mention the mouth-watering food on the menu! Loads of accommodation options, but the Ferguson Farmstay is difficult to beat.

Week-away holidays

Road trip: Indian Ocean drive

Just like the surprising number of Victorians who have never driven the Great Ocean Road before, we’re guessing a lot of WA residents are yet to take a road trip along the Indian Ocean. Stop making excuses and get going, because it’s not to be missed. Starting in Perth, you’ll make your way north along the coast all the way to Kalbarri National Park and back. The beauty of this drive is that you can mark where you want to stop; there’s no hard and fast rule as to where you have to stop and/or spend the night. Better still, go for longer than a week and do the whole Coral Coast Highway trip all the way up to Ningaloo Reef!

Monkey Mia

Eight-hundred-and-fifty k’s away from Perth (north, that is), Monkey Mia is a great spot to spend a week or more. Staying in the beachfront accommodation there is your ticket to getting rid of all your stress, and you can do absolutely nothing but relax all day, every day if you want. If and when you find a bit of energy, how does swimming with dolphins sound? Or maybe some leisurely snorkeling, a swim in the pool, or some tennis? Then there’s the Monkey Bar and its beer garden...
